for if they take you in the morning,

if they come in the morning,
then i will always be haunted by that thin sheet of light
how it crept in so subtle
stole the dark envelope

if they take it
then we can not leave it behind

-

if we conspire for the dawn to save the night
what was once ripped up and flung away
then the morning will not come

if we leave it behind
then they will not take it

-

if they come in the morning,
then we will cast up stars of flares
pull the ramparts down

if we bring your body and breath down
to touch the earth,
then i will whisper final secrets to your ears
speak tender and horror with my eyes
crossed crossing the room the threshold
plead final promise

-

if they come in the morning,
then the moon paths following
long mourning trails
where pilgrims pass
through the undergrowth
will dissipate into unwillingness

what the night acknowledged
will turn cumbersome at the dawn
